They make spring and summer interesting. Especially summer, when there is very little temperature variation. So long as you're inside, and not using plumbing/plugged in electronics, you're safe and there's nothing to worry about. And even if you are doing one of those things, you still probably won't be struck by lightning.

I'm not sure when the last official derecho here was. Bow echo storms occur occasionally.

I recall a derecho back on May 3, 2009 which occurred during the morning hours.

I agree. Summer would be quite boring without thunderstorms...

The spring and summer thunderstorms when they occur here in Renmark and NW Vic are something else. Last November, never seen lightning like this in my life. And rain, it is almost always in intense downpours. Drizzle is almost non-existent. The storms I seen in my nearly 3 decades in Melbourne cannot compare in any shape or form. There is no threat of coastal much obscuring the action, it is all clear air cells all the way here, feeding off raw heat and reaching up to and over 50,000ft. You can see lighting from over 300km away on a clear night.

Thunderstorms when they happen here are plain epic. A real thrill ride.
