It's kind of protected by the Olympic mountains, so it rains less.

yeah but less rain doesn't mean more sun - i'd assumed both cities would have identical sunshine figures

Is Olympia cloudier than Seattle and Bellingham?

There s a way to find out (can't say source here, ask in pm if you need to know) and the answer is less. 136 mostly sunny days for Olympia. Seattle and Bellingham have 15-20 more sunny days. Olymia gets more considerably more rain those those 2 as well.

B: Temperature-wise it's close to perfect - seasonal, but not extreme. I could use more even distribution of rainfall though, although the # hrs per year mix of sun and clouds/rain is pretty close to my liking.

I agree, Winter, Fall and Spring are great but the Summers are too dry and a lack of thunderstorms

When I lived in the area, I considered the summer & fall to be fabulous. You aren't going to get a lot of rain in summer anywhere in Northwest but it is still usually very lush & green. Some spots on coast will get the most but still not a lot and nothing like winter / spring. A gardener would need to water but the water is available in the reservoirs.

You won't get much thunder anywhere in western WA. It is too cool. But there will be some thunder in the Cascade mountains and east of there.

Yeah I lived here a bit over a year and heard thunder maybe 3 times very briefly. Nothing like the intensity of east coast thunderstorms though. Once it was thundersnow though which was cool.

What time of year did the other thunder days occur?

I'm wondering if winter is the season for thunder there, like my climate.
