There's a lot of budding and blooming in England as well (at least compared to what I was expecting for February). But no full-sized trees have leaves on them yet. After this week's days in the high teens C (mid 60s F), the upcoming week is supposed to have highs around 10C/50F with a lot of rain. That is more normal for this time of year AFAIK. On the other hand, Oklahoma is supposed to have near-record cold for the start of March. They could get their coldest weather of the season then!
One of my dwarf crepe myrtles is budding. This is way too early. The mature crepe myrtle shows no signs of budding.
No signs of buds on the pin oak, the Spanish oaks are starting to lose their winter leaves. Usually they lose their leaves early March, then it buds by mid March and full leaves by end of month. They are year round deciduous but they have to shed their leaves in the spring so they can get new growth.
Boxwoods are growing, blushing princesses are blooming, lilies are blooming, peppers are blooming, peach tree is flowering.
This upcoming freeze is probably going to kill off a lot though.
We just had one of the cloudiest months on record with only 84.6 hours of sun record. Just another reason why I've been so down in the dumps lately. Normal for February is 139.6 hours which isn't much to begin with. February also ended up -1.8F below average. January was -2.8F, and December was +5.5F above average. So officially meteorological winter as a whole in Chicago was +0.9F above average. Meteorological fall was -1.2F below normal because of November being so cold..
