Fine, so educate us. Would love to hear how this hurts whales.

Desal is the obvious solution to many of our water supply problems and has almost no negative side effects. The newest ones use solar energy and are totally "net zero" in energy consumption.

The biggest problem is the high-salt slurry that the desalination process creates. Dumping this back into the ocean harms coastal mollusks and other sea life. The solution is to not dump it into the sea, but instead dig a salt mine and dump it there, problem solved.

Then there's the Israeli invention that captures drinkable water from the air. They have small scale and larger scale versions that essentially work like dehumidifiers. A few large ones could supply the drinking water needs for a moderate sized town.

In my opinion, deserts are pretty interesting places and if we did turn into the Sahara, well, that's what dune buggies and camels are for. And as a bonus, sand is really useful for making glass and construction material!

Wow at the number of votes for the other opinion option, if I had to choose I would pick either option two or three.
