So we are +9.5 hours GMT. Why the half hour ? No idea..... The Australian continent has 3 standard time zones.
Western +8 GMT
Central +9.5 GMT
Eastern +10 GMT
CONUS approx spanning the same longitudes as Australia has 4 time zones.
Darwin at 12*S of the Equator only has approx 45 mins difference in daylight hours between mid winter and mid summer.
