How have been this year so far in terms of forecasting across Australia and NZ? Here a complete disaster for sure (they say corona is guilty, because it caused a reduction in flights and their sensible data provided to the models). Today wasn't the exception, the hyped cold blast was very weak after all, at least for Buenos Aires city. Still, some impressive lows in the inner country:

V Reynolds -13,1 (August record)
S.R. De Conlara -12 (August record)
Malargüe -10,6
Uspallata-9,1
San Carlos -8,5
M Juarez -8,2 (2nd lowest on record for August)
Bolivar -7,4
Jachal -7,2
Junín -6,8 (2nd lowest on record for August)
Río Cuarto -5ºC (August record)

Also some light snow in the high sierras of Cordoba province. And now southern Brazil is reporting flurries over 1000m.

2020 continues to throw surprises in the weather department as while snow falls across Vic, Tas, NSW, the NW corner bakes as the country records the first 40+ day for the season and it also being a national record. Yampi Sound Defence AWS reached 40.7°C at 144pm WA time, beating the previous national record for August by 0.7c that was set at Kalumburu Mission on the 27th Aug 1970

The cold blast just reached the equatorial Amazon! That drop down would feel terrible for the people up there!

In the Mato Grosso, Cuiabá was baking with 40ºC just a couple of days ago, and yesterday they didn't even get 20ºC

New Australian max temp records set on consecutive days up in the Kimberley this weekend.
The previous August record of 40.0c was set at Kalumburu way back in 1970.
On Saturday, The Defence facility at Yampi Sound broke the old mark with 40.7c, and today West Roebuck reached 41.2c ! Outstanding heat for August..... and it is expected many Top End, Kimberley and Pilbara sites will record new August heat records before the end of the month.
All Top End weather nuts like seeing August heat.... the Kimberley heat low is the engine room for the impending storm season.

Some big August numbers in the Pilbara yesterday...Port Hedland 39.9c ! And 39.1c at Karratha, a full 3.7c above the previous August record !
Plenty of other record August record heat in the region today including Mardie, Onslow and Roebourne.
Roebourne Airports 39.5c is also 3.1c above the pre 2020 August record max temp at the site. ( which has been exceeded now on the last 5 consecutive days )
Outstanding winter heat !

Overall winter 2020 was warmer and drier than average in Australia.

Quote:
  • Nationally, Australia's sixth-warmest winter on record; and the warmest winter on record for Western Australia
  • Mean maximum temperature warmer than average for most of the country, but near-average for much of the inland south-eastern mainland
  • Mean minimum temperature warmer than average for the west, north, and east coast; but cooler than average for eastern South Australia, western New South Wales and western Victoria
  • A drier than average winter for Australia as a whole
  • Rainfall for the season was below average for much of southern Australia but wetter than average for Gippsland and south-east New South Wales
  • While large areas have received above average rainfall in one or more months this year, longer-term rainfall deficits still persist in many parts of Australia
