A low temperature of 40F this morning, coolest of the season so far after already recording a 45F low temperature in September. One of the warmest October months on record here, another ugly one for fall foliage.

We had a 32 degree low at Rochelle some 50 miles west of ORD this morning. The city airports both dipped to 43F while the lakefront bottomed out at 47F. My low was 39 degrees and I felt it. Definitely not used to it.
Quite remarkable and nearly as anomalous as March 2012. ORD's average max/min as of the 16th is 72.7F/60.5F which is +9.6F above normal with the normal max/min to date being 66.1F/68.1F. Midway's is 74.4F/61.8F which is +9.7F above normal with the normal max/min to date being 67.1F/49.7F.

Models continue to show overall warmer than normal conditions right through the end of the month. Some runs are showing cool shots especially in the Northeast but not breaking this above normal pattern in the Central US.
Those same models (Euro and GFS) are in agreement for a strong mid-latitude cyclone off Vancouver Island/Washington State this time next week.
Uppers dig to the west with ridging in the east--associated with SSW perhaps.
975 mb surface low off the coast with tight gradients. Something looks to be happening the midwest too.
Wave heights to 10 meters off the coast. Surfs up!
First rainfall in the Bay Area in over six months. Most areas getting about 1/10th of an inch with more expected this week. Great news for firefighting, especially in areas further north that have had more fires but are getting more rain. Water restrictions just went into effect in San Jose, will see what happens if we get the atmospheric river the local mets are promising.
lows around 15c towards the end of the week, highs consistent around 18-21c.
Not much rain at all, we're having a very sunny october for once
