In central Minnesota it is around Sept 20, but in 1974 we had a full moon ( clar skies) the last few nights of August and had a killing frost on Sept1.
That was a catastrophy for corn farmers that year and would be worst this year.
For Merrimack County, NH the average first frost is September 21 and the average last frost is May 20.
Frost and freeze conditions have been known to occur in June and August in sheltered valleys. Although the occurance during those two months is rare.
Most farms are in the river valleys around here with horse farms on hillsides. The rest of the land is mostly wooded (mixed softwood and hardwood) along with a few fields. Soils are incredible around here with a good silty loam mixture with sandy soils in some spots. Orchards are not uncommon around here, and they have extremely high yields given the fairly short growing season.
Upper Wisconsin and da UP had upper 30's already so the lows are probably not far behind! I'm not sure when the first frost is inland, here at the lake shore it is very late for a hard on the ground freeze. Corn this year is bad already in some areas due to the lack of rain.
As a kid staying at a resort (UP) in Aug., the owner would go around asking if we needed anything, more blankets, extra wood because temps were going to be in the 30's overnight! We always thought it was exciting and to this day, I still would! I think I have an overdose of Pollyanna!
I bet the cultural differences are like night and day, eh?
