Being in the southern hemisphere, it starts to feel cold early May as the mornings start to bite a bit (mid 50s F or 12-14C). Early May our maximums are still in the high 60s/low 70s, just notice it more in the mornings!
Another indicator is my jacket which lies dormant in the wardrobe from mid to late October through to early May. It is now back in use again!
On Long Island, we get our first "cool" day (i.e, high temp below 60F/15C) in early October.
The first freeze (0C) generally occurs in early November.
The first day with a high temperature below freezing usually occurs in mid-December.
The temp (almost) never drops below 0F (-18C); Plant Hardiness Zone 7.

It's relative to what you're used to. I am acclimated to where I live, and I notice a change at the 70 mark for both highs and lows. So morning get noticeably cooler for us by Oct 6th, while afternoons colder by Dec 6th
