Thoughts on Loxahatchee (Wellington, Hernando, Brooksville: HOA fees, houses, middle school)

My family currently resides in Brooksville, FL, but are considering relocating to the East Coast, specifically PB County, because we believe business opportunities may be better there.

We are now in a rural part of Brooksville, and would like to find a similar area on the other coast, if possible. We like the privacy and quiet of small town living, but realize we need to be closer to a metropolitan area than we are now in order to make a living.

Can anyone give me their input on Loxahatchee? Just for a frame of reference, we are white, generally convervative (although we are not church people), in our mid-40's, and have a son entering middle school. We don't have any other family here in Florida.

loxahatchee is a cool place, its out there away from most of PBC, big lots, well water most places, that type of thing

past few years they have had cancer cluster problems out there, which is kind of making me want to avoid the area, other then that and I would try to move there just because its the type of setting I like.


I don't think moving to palm beach county to try to expand business or for business opprutunities is a good thing. most regular middle class people here are struggling big time

Lots of big lots and very "country" compared to the rest of PBC but it's definitely full of guys in camo caps driving giant pickups with mud flaps.

Can anyone tell me what the difference between Loxahatchee and The Acreage is? They seem to ooze together on the map and I am not sure of the dividing line. Thanks!

acerage is more east and north end

loxahatchee is more west area.... I'd say west of 140th

purely based on opinion.. could be totally wrong if they really do have true boundaries

You will like the area. Lox and the Acreage are alike, except that Lox has some 5 and 10 acre lots.

You have to like quiet, no street lights, and dirt roads though. Otherwise you can live in one of those many monolopy houses that are 15 feet apart and all look the same. Plus in those cozy gated community's you get to pay large HOA fees. Now who wouldn't like to do that?

It floods a lot in Loxahatchee due to poor drainage, much of the roads are not paved, you will see kids on 4 wheelers flying down the roads with no helmets at high rates speeds. Mosquitoes are really bad as are snakes and bugs. You will hear gun shots and see plenty of swamp buggies and jacked up pick-up trucks with stickers that say "Welcome to Loxahatchee, now go home" or "2012 the end of error" or even better "If you love NY, then take I95 North".

It's the direct opposite of the PBC atmosphere, on average that is and these people seem more and more out of place here. More like what you would see in other rural parts of Florida or GA. Now, not all the residents of Loxahatchee fit the stereotype, but many are proud of displaying the rebel flag with stickers on trucks or plates along with what Mayor Hagger stated Camo hats which is a requirement. A few years ago I saw a kid that fit the mold driving a big truck, had a rebel flag mounted on a pole in the bed, was driving around the Wellington Mall and down Forest Hill, can't say if he was flying the colors for a reason or just to provoke people? Can say this though, the guy looked about as out of place as a Justin Bieber Fan at a Slipknot concert.

Some people really like it out there, whatever floats your boat.

Thanks to all for the info. We're probably going to try to stick it out here in Hernando County if possible, since we don't want to have to uproot our son. I guess the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
