Ill be moving to the WPB area later this month and would like to know a little about registering my car. Do the DMV go by the year of your car to determine the cost to register your car? And do you have to have a city sticker as well? Thanks in advance

I recently went through this. Overview:

- Get car insurance first

- Then get your license switched over (you can actually make an appt online to see the DMV.) You need a variety of documents with you: FL insurance, SS, and proof of residence like a utility bill

- Once you have license and insurance, go to Tax Assessor's office to get your plate and registration. Take your car - they need to look at it. You'll get your plates right there.

There is no emissions or annual test needed for your car, which was a surprise to me.

Save some money - Cost about $500 all-in. The bulk is at the tax office where they'll ask for around $400 upfront. I recall having to write a check as I don't think they took credit cards. It's worth double checking all the approved methods of payment for all three steps.

Hope this helps

Go to the Fl. dmv website and make an appt. to have your license switched over. You don't have to be here or be a resident yet. The last I checked the wait was over a month. Go over the list of papers you must bring with you and get it right or you might have to wait another month. I couldn't believe how complicated they made this process. I need my license to work and didn't expect what Florida turned this into.

Anyone going to the DMV will have the first taste of FLorida. Don't buy, rent a house, if when you want to get out is easier.

The State just increased registration fees and etc. It's gotten more expensive to own a car here on top of high insurance rates.

If the car is leased you'll pay more for registration, they surcharge you. The registration will come a month or so before your birthday with no breakdown of the costs. If you get a specialty plate that will bump up the yearly costs as well, but the $ goes to a good cause.

This was listed on the net as some rough ideas on the increases:

Renewing driver's license:
Before: $20
After: $48
Percent increase: 140%

Delinquent fee
Before: $1
After: $15
Percent increase: 1400%

Replace license
Before: $10
After: $25 Percent increase: 150%

Registration renewal

Vehicles under 2,500 lbs For example: Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris, Mazda Miata and Hyundai Accent
Before: $28.10
After: $46.65
Percent increase: 66%

Vehicles 2,500 to 3,499 lbs For example: Nissan Altima, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Ford Taurus, Chevy Malibu and Honda Accord
Before: $36.10
After: $57.65
Percent increase: 60%

Vehicles over 3,500 lbs For example: Chevy Silverado, Chevy Impala, Ford Explorer, Dodge Charger, Nissan Maxima, Toyota 4Runner
Before: $46.10
After: $71.15
Percent change: 54%

Transfer title with original registration (used car purchase) For example: a used Toyota Camry with the Sea Turtle plate
Total title and registration, including initial registration fee Before: $209.85
After: $396.40
Percent change: 89%

Original title (new car purchase) For example, Toyota 4Runner

After: $403.90
Percent change: 110%

Original title (transfer from out of state) For example: Honda Civic
Total title and registration, including initial registration fee
Before: $161.85
After: $351.40
Percent change: 117%
