Coaches and players say these things because they are instructed to. Do you REALLY think that the players would come out and say what they think to the media? "No, this isn't a rivalry. Marshall is beneath us and we hate having to play them." OF COURSE NOT. Players are given rough instructions on how to conduct themselves towards the media.
Forgot to add this to the post this morning, if they are supposed to act a certain way toward the media with their answers, someone forgot to tell Bob Huggins. When he is asked about playing Marshall, he pretty much says what you posted above. Kind of puts holes in that argument.
It's not a rivalry, and Chris, if you're from Charleston you must have seen the newspaper polls on the subject. It is more than 2-1 against renewing the "series". It is a rivalry to Marshall because they validate everything they do with how it stacks up against West Virginia, but it isn't any real rivalry. The vast majority of West Virginia fans simply don't want it. They're the ones who pay the bills in Morgantown, not fair weather Herd apologists or anyone associated with Marshall.
Now, I'm not saying Marshall, or WV State for that matter, could NEVER win the game. If our team waits too long to wake up once too often it could happen. Do something stupid like playing the game too often and that could be a result. That doesn't make it a rivalry.
