Years ago I had a 1976 T-Bird with a 460 Cu Inch engine. The gas mileage was horrible in town but on a trip that car was a crusier..Would just idle along and got an honest 16 to 17 mpg...With that long hood in front of the windshield it was like navigating a battleship down the highway..like floating on air...
The very best highway crusier was our 1986 Lincoln town car...same silver color as the limo in 'Pretty Woman'. Like traveling in the living room...backseat big enough to really stretch out...and an honest 25 to 26 mpg on a good day...
The mini van is great because of versitility...keep a cooler between the front seats...able to move around inside..great sound system and everyone can visit comfortably if friends are taken...flop the seats down and throw in a futon mattress and head for the mountains...instant camper...I think everybody needs a mini van...I tell everyone that I will be buried in ours.
Easy to roll up and hold with a couple of bungees..
We were camping in that mini van on Big Bend at Smoke Hole 2 yrs ago when that big mama bear brought her cubs on tour. Their grunting woke me up and we watched them through the windows...I was glad we were inside the vehicle...probably not much protection...but the thought of it was there...glad we were not in a tent that night...
I drive a 1999 Ford Contour. Just today some jerk dented my fender in the parking lot and sped off, and earlier in the morning I couldn't get my door to stay shut. It's nearing the time for a new car for me too, especially since I'm about to hit the 100,000 mile mark!

Reason: Typo
Nobody can disagree with torque, durability and economy of a diesel. BUT it's not very economical here and now. There is 1 exception- Mercedes E320 CDI- just $500 more expensive than its gas brother. (52500 vs 52000) There is no incentives for cars and a fuel here in the states unlike the Europe. I like the diesel more than weird hybrids, I was planning to buy one but gave up the idea. If I travel 100-200 miles a day maybe I would spend more for a diesel...BUT we don't have diesel cars except Jetta and 320 CDI. None. They sell EVERY model with diesel engine in Europe- volvos, bmw, all benzes, saabs- all of them. They are sold in Canad too. Not here. Why??
And currently the ULSD blends with the emissions requirements on new diesels = lower mpg (overall).
I don't think diesel has a bright future unless manufacturers here in the US can overcome that problem.
ULSD in my truck dropped my mpg by quite a bit, not to mention losing some very important lubricity..
