Big Al: I was explaining the reason to my son the other day...Europe doesn't have to store 2 fuel items...#2 fuel and Diesel the same thing...one having a dye and I don't know if they even have EPA regs there...same son telling me he's trading in the mustang and getting one of those 320's and telling me that they give 40 mpg...well, we will see. Why spend the bucks? Prudent driving of the right machine will save money every time...

Exactly! good driving manners will give you a good mileage and preserve a car. It's not difficult to get bad mileage on a diesel and even kill the engine. or at least spend a lot on repairs, diesel maintanence is more expensive.
It not worth it- to spend a dollar to save a penny.

Funny thing is is that diesels are technically less complicated than gassers and originally invented to run on...peanut oil.

But the expense comes from the heavier-duty components needed to withstand the insane (20+:1) compression ratios that make a diesel work.

Back in the 70s, GM tried to sell a "light-duty" diesel in Olds (and maybe Chevy) sedans, and had all sorts of reliability problems.

Yeah but GM's idea of a light duty diesel was a bastardized v-6 / v-8 off the shelf platform. I had a 6.2L GM in a 3/4 ton truck and it was enemic to say the least. Of course it didn't help that the truck was a 3spd auto, no o/d and 4.56 axles! Top speed wsa 45 mph!

I agree the big expense with diesel motors is found in the International/Duramx/Cummins designs, but those babies are built to tow and haul serious stuff. If you look at the Mercedes platform, it's not really that much 'beefier' than a normal gasoline engine (as compared with a v-8 block to say a Cummins).

I was looking at a used Jetta tdi, 2007 I believe, and it was the same price as a Wolfsburg Edition and about $2,500 more than a GLI edition.

The TDI gets 44mpg highway, the GLI gets 28mpg. So at 15,000 miles per year, at current prices, the tdi saves about $425 p/yr in fuel and the motor should last quite a bit longer than the gasser with a 5-6year break even in cost with the gasser GLI version.

Eh... maybe if the demand increased for diesel cars, the price would drop.. But then again the cost of diesel would more than likely continue to rise... Hurummph hurummph.

I like the looks of the Volt, coming from Chevy in a couple of years. But I've vowed to never buy the first version of anything.

I never want to buy the first version either. But sadly I'm a sucker for the new BMW 132 they are introducing this year. They had a 1 series in the 70's I believe, and continued it longer in Europe longer than in the states I believe. But they have brought it back, and as soon as Mosses in St. Albans gets one I'm test driving it to compare it to an 08Nissan Altima I've been checking out. If I do go with the BMW though I'll head to the South Hills BMW near Pittsburgh to purchase, better selection and bargining power.
