Thing of it is, american moderate mob rules would apply if not for 2 party system dividing them so consistently. 3rd parties that were truly representational of the moderates ('common sense' platforms) upset everyones apple cart, and right wing, sponsored by the big 2 who were equally threatened, rewrote the message. As-is system buffers the extreme ends from being completely marginalized, moderates are happily divided, and the two party system is preserved. History may be honest about the rise and fall of the independence party, usurped by right wing, but not if dems and repubs are writing the book.

That fudgy grey area negotiated- when you're in a voting booth forced to decide when no candidate is 100% what you need. I've resorted to separating them out (sometimes with nose holding as DK said in another thread) if someone took a hardline stance for or against something that I emphatically agree/disagree with, and reagan is an example. He'd never get my vote. I think clinton was a bit too liberal leaning for my taste, but seeing him actively reduce the deficit, I had no regrets casting my vote his way twice. Private scandal was irrelevant measured against actual performance in my thinking.
Another method that's helped me decide, and I've heard this from other people as well, that when other branches of the government are skewed one way, I tend to want to balance it out when it comes to other branches. I find myself focused less on the candidate as an individual and more on the generic policies they practice. Something of a tempering tool, when you have a repub presidency offset by dem congress or vice versa. Disbursing party power evenly through Exec/legis/judicial/local forces seems the best way to minister the checks and balances of gov't.
So, it's not just the benchmark of a specific issue, but also the political climate factor.

I remember Bill Clinton's campaign as the 'Great American Centrist....Looking back at McCain's love affair with the Dem's and so many legislative compromises that almost had him be asked to switch parties...I will venture a guess...

In claiming the Conservative Right and having 5 months to massage them back into the fold, while at the same time offering himself up on a platter as a liberal leaning candidate.
He is taking most of the high ground away from Obama. Leaves Obama with only part of the middle libs and the extreme factions...that's about 50/60% of the electorate as I see it.

Stumbling blocks remain: Age....but the right VP candidate could dilute that...
Strengths remain powerful: Experience and old time political savy...
Only person who can outfox him is Hillary...with hubby and James Carville.

The VP choice will be the deciding factor as to who is Pres....either candidate...

I've seen Crist (Gov. of FL) floated as a possible Veep for McCain. Lots of electoral votes in Florida.

I'm trying to think of a youngish (40s-50s) Republican Senator, but can't think of any off the top of my head.

I don't know what he's doing now but what about J.C. Watts, former Representative from Oklahoma? I think he runs a lobbying firm now so I'm not sure how that would play out. But I like that guy.

I like Ron Paul. I'm not sure his politics and style would mesh with McCain, though.

Too much intelligence shone through to be considered...

We would be having a discussion of real issues like the 800 lb gorillias facing us in the near and distant future....Both He and Romney were threats to the establishment.

This is a joke. Facism and socialism are degrees of the same thing. Socialists believe in using the state and big government to control people. That is facism if taken to the extreme. Facism has nothing to to with the right. The right believes in freedom from government and state controls.

Mussolini himself said fascism was completely opposed to socialism.

fascism has a single leader, with an agenda imposed upon the people without consent or limitation.

socialism is still a government by the people for the people that serves the general common needs of the people.

As far as I know, no dem is wanting anyone to eliminate the constitution or declaration of independence. In fact liberals have been screaming for it to be restored. Democracy will stay in place, and proposed plans are for socialist healthcare only.
Bush repubs have undermined our rights and practiced techniques of fascists. So... is that the new republican party? Their feet don't match their talk. The only time they don't want control is in a rigged utilities, oil or real estate market. Bush didn't do this alone, it was the entire repub party behind him.
