That's odd because the zenon water system is supposed to be more thorough at cleaning the water. Perhaps the silt introduction & parasites would have contaminated the old system just the same? Info too vague here to really make a clear picture. One question I'd love to ask if I were a fairmont resident is of the GE zenon people who sold the system- is this really what we paid for, and shouldn't you be % culpable toward project completion for defects? Unforseen circumstances happen all the time, but did they fail to see obvious requirements? Wish a reporter would chase after those details.

The new Fairmont System is a RO system.. worked very well on canadian lake water...no one checked to see if the water needed pre-filtered, which the old system would have done. River plugs it up and the filters are backwashed...It's a catastrophe...very quiet one too...someone...I mean something really stinks about this project...even more than the water stinks...smells just like pond water..and really nobody left to answer any questions...21 million dollars up the creek...

The best investigative reporters from the Fairmont paper moved on years ago...Jenny Vincent was one, Hohman was the other...award winning...

21 mill isn't up the creek, it will get done one way or another. Will casinos mentioned in another thread be dependant upon that water? Or would that be another municipality jurisdiction?

The pricetag isn't so out of line if they were getting what they paid for, which is my annoyance with american biz today playing to lose. Quality sacraficed for profits today means people will shop elsewhere next time around, particularly with newer technology manufacturers rush to market with but won't stand behind. Have they rendered themselves incapable of learning from ford/toyota dynamics?

The system was part of the local infrastructure up-grade...would handle 80,000 homes as the old system was designed to do in 1910.
What is so crazy about this problem is the old system could have been upgraded for about 3/4 million and kept on hand as a back up system or pre-filter..that's peanuts.

Yes, the new casino will use the water unless they operate their own private plant which is feasable...but bottled water is the answer and everybody drinks that, uses water from their water heater or boils it...(all of this from a Fairmont friend)

Morgantown's system is very good...why didn't anybody ask them for some advice? It's only 17 miles away.

To top it off...Fairmont wants to sell this questionable commodity to other nearby towns to enhance their 'revenue stream...how would you feel?...safe to give to the kids or old folks?
Too important to take a chance...and the 21 million will become 31 million when its over..that's a projected water cost of $50.00 per month....when it was increased to $16.00.
Sewage in Fairmont is 2X the water cost...there's money to be made with this one...front and back.

Interesting news article in todays edition of timewv.com Sunday July 13.

States the water system cost at 40 million...this is new...was supposed to be 21 million????? Makes a person wonder...who was on the city council?...rubber stamp? Does this need an investigation????

Needs the light of day gets my vote. 100% overages for a budget should be enough cause for heads to roll. Go ahead and line up a perp walk. Let's hear their stories. I'll tell you the stories they'll come up with-- politicians are not experts, and had to rely on claims made by the company who sold it to them. There will be plenty of finger pointing, and in the end it's nobodys fault if a company is large enough. Odd how that math works out. Small biz would be run out on a rail over same exact thing.

NYC has world renowned water quality due to upstate NY aquifers, but some things do sneak in seasonally. Virus called cryptosporidium notorious in spring and fall, and those with compromised immune systems are the first to get beat up from traditional municipal treatment facilities.

Not sure if UV treatment would kill it when dealing with volumes. I just don't know enough about water filtration systems to judge, because even the FDA statements posted at their site reflect claims that all systems that aren't municipal using chemicals are over priced malarchy. Then again, FDA is big on prevention about salmonella infected produce, right?

Seems to me the only legit scrutiny of this subject I'd trust is consumer reports type orgs. Europeans don't carry the agenda about their science on these subjects IMO.

Botanical studies for naturopathic medicine are example. No miracle cures, but who would have suspected oregano essential oil would be the most potent anti biotic in nature veritably free, or if shea butter cannot cure your skin problem, that's when to go to a dematoligist? This news never makes it to the states because... ?

Speaking of utilities and such.... how much do you pay for garbage collection?

Our garbage collection company must be in some problems. They are scheduled to come on Thursdays. Lately it's been anywhere from Thurs at 6am to Saturday afternoon. Note: I don't live in a rural area.

This past collection period -- they were supposed to come last Thursday. They finally made it on Wednesday. Needless to say, they did not come back today (Thursday).

It has been HOT HOT HOT, everyone had their garbage sitting at the curb for a week in anticipation of pickup. Let me tell you - walks down the street included some nasty smells.

We pay about $19 per month for garbage collection. What is it in your area?
(We have green cans issued by the garbage company. We don't pay per bag.)

An update: At the latest city of Fairmont council meeting (7/22/2008) they tabled the scheduled discussion on the proposed water rate hike and said they would hold-off on it (both discussing it and implementing it) until after the mediation that is scheduled for August 28, 2008. They did disclose, however, that the proposed hike (which had previously only been referred to as 'significant') was to be a whopping 51%!! I am unsure as of this writing whether or not the other utilities on this city bill ---the sewage, storm water run-off, fire fee, & garbage will also rise accordingly, since they are based %-wise on the water bill.
