Do you're self a huge favor. Stay off the Metro. People smell of very heavy perfume or very nasty body Oder. No in-between, avoid public transportation in the Washington D.C Metro area at all costs. The last time I rode the Metro(this was several years ago) I witness two men urinating in the corner of the subway car and one on the fabric seat covers. Never again. Never.
I wish i had recieved this memo last summer before my family took a trip there. However we only rode the metro during business hours between 8am-5pm. We mostly sit around business class luckily.
How is this relevant to WV? Also.. the DC metro is the cleanest in America and has the 2nd highest ridership behind NYC (which is the disgusting one). For christ sakes, people aren't even allowed to eat or drink bottles of water on the metro.
Furthermore, where did this post come from? You said you hadn't ridden it in several years, and based off your "experiences", I'd imagine the last time you rode it was in 1979 somewhere near SE or PG county.
Also.. come on.. I'd rather people smell of perfume than of BO.
Then SilkDaShocker agrees with you, saying he wishes he had heard this before his horrifying ride during business hours surrounded by wealthy business people in suits? Good god, have you people been to huntington or logan?!
Thanks convex...my old Marine unit is having a reunion this spring in DC and will make transportation adustments...last thing we need is a dose of AIDS from the riders...
Do the bums have free passes like the other big cities?
Why don't you stay out of the "big city", we'd prefer it that way. Plus, I'd hope you'd be against such socialist practices like public transportation. Though, I'm not sure how you'll get there without our highway system. Maybe you can walk through the jungle, it'll be like old times, just watch out for those bums!

The biggest problem is crowding during rush hour. Other than that, beyond the occasional slowdowns, its been a good system that I've ridden for the last 17 years without any real problems.
The Washington METRO system is probably the cleanest mass transit system in the country. It is safe, clean and efficient. You can buy a farecard at the rail entrance that should last the duration of your stay. If you have a smart phone you can download their Trip Planner and it will pick the best route for you. Driving in the museum/downtown part of Washington is not a good idea as parking is very limited and fairly expensive. If you don't want to pay downtown hotel prices, the smart thing to do is to stay at a suburban hotel near a metro stop and then ride the train in.
Most DC residents use the METRO system regularly. As other have said. The METRO is packed at rush hour so schedule accordingly.
Yes I agree with the previous poster. You can get to just about anywhere in downtown DC, Arlington, Alexandria and environs via Metro without any parking worries.
