I am earnestly considering relocating from Columbus, Ohio to the WV panhandle and seeking employment in the D.C. NVA region. I currently am employed full time as a paralegal with local govt and part-time as a fraud analyst with a major bank.
I am hoping to utilize an A.A.S. in Legal Assisting, a B.S. degree, and a JD degree in finding work either directly for the federal govt or in the alternative, working for a company which contracts with the federal govt. I also spent eight years as an Intilligence Analyst in the United States Army and am a veteran of the Persian Gulf. I am currently not a licensed attorney and have little desire to work as an attorney. I have two questions for those living in the area.
First, with the basics of my resume before you, is my goal for employment with either govt or the private sector viable and if so, how would you suggest someone living elsewhere to secure such employment?
Second, for economic reasons I think living in the panhandle of WV and commuting to D.C. or NVA would be my best option initially. How do people living in the area commute to those areas. Do you drive or use public transportation.
Any suggestions you might have would be welcome
Lots of newly opened Fed facilities here which may offer employment opportunities.
USDA, USCG, VA medical center, IRS in Kearneysville, WV
Border Patrol/ATF firearms training facility & National Park Service @ Harpers Ferry, WV US FWS - National Conservation Training Center @ Shepherdstown, WV
Also nearby, Fort Dietrick @ Frederick MD with a wide variety of Fed & Contract positions.
Private employment available here as well as Frederick, Hagerstown, Rockville, Gaithersburg, or Northern VA as many companies are headquartered throughout the region.
Transportation / commuting is relatively easy from this area.
The MARC train runs into Washington DC with stops along the way including: Martinsburg, Duffields, Harpers Ferry, Brunswick, Frederick, etc. [MARC schedule: http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/marc/schedulesSystemMaps/BrunswickInsidePanel%2001-12-09%20(3).pdf (broken link) ]
Eastward commuter routes towards DC & suburbs from central Jefferson include: north to I-70 or east on Rt. 340 to I-270; Rt. 9 east to Rt. 7 toward Leesburg & the Greenway; also cities along the I-81 Corridor are easily accesible. Carpooling vans also operate out of this area. The right choice really depends on your work location & schedule.
The majority of the Jefferson County workforce commutes eastward because of the typically higher paying jobs and the relatively low cost of living here.

Fraud analyst? I'd think FDIC, Fannie Mae, Sallie Mae, SEC would have some openings.
BTW, just so you don't get advice for the wrong part of WV, you're asking about the Eastern Panhandle... WV also has a Northern Panhandle (Weirton, Wheeling, Moundsville, etc.) and while your post made it clear which one you're asking about, it pays to be specific.
Why would FNMA & FMAC have fraud analysts? Isn't that what the 'F' stands for?
