I'm posting this in each state we plan to visit!
My husband and I live in NE PA. We are planning a summer road trip with our two sons who are younger than 10 years old. Our plan is to drive down Route 11. We want to take in more of the countryside then interstates allow.
So, my question? Recommend local places to us to visit in your state! Preferably within a few hours of Route 11. We are looking for museums, amusement parks, state parks, etc. Thanks so much!

When you cross from Maryland into West Virginia in the Eastern Panhandle, detour east to Harper's Ferry WV (John Brown's Raid, Civil War). Antietam Battlefield in Maryland is not far away, either.

Continuing south on US-11, at Winchester VA, take US-50 West to Romney WV (Potomac Eagle Excursion Train), then continue west to US-219. Go south on 219 to Blackwater Falls SP (towns of Davis and Thomas), the Canaan Valley, and the Dolly Sods Wilderness.

Further south on 219 will be Cass Scenic Railroad, Watoga State Park, Droop Mountain Battlefield SP, and the Cranberry Glades.

At Lewisburg WV you will intersect I-64, which you can take back east to US-11 (passing the Greenbrier Resort on the way), or west to Beckley.

Have fun, enjoy your visit to Wild and Wonderful, and allow more time than you think you'll need.

Thanks so much Snorpus! I appreciate the info! The railroads sound like something our kids would love.

agreed. keep it to the east of the state for the best of nature. especially recommend blackwater falls, the town of davis is quaint, canaan valley is gorgeous, elkins is a nice pit stop. also recommend a small detour to view the tucker county wind farm. it is breathtaking to see up close and will take you through, what i think, is the epitome and 'heart' of the WV hills. greenbank telescope is another site worth seeing
