I've lived in Pelham for 20 years -- raised 2 kids here, we're getting ready to move back West for a job opportunity. We go into the city quite often, driving in on the weekends is not a big deal once you get a feel for where to park, Sundays are much easier.
Another approach is to drive into the Northeastern Bronx (around Pelham Parkway) and take the subway from there (the number 5). Several of the stations are in nice residential areas, so parking isn't a big deal and the ride costs $2.50. Takes a little longer then the train, but is much cheaper.
Living in Southern Westchester is a great way to have it "both ways" -- city when you want it and suburbia when you don't.
I had to smile at the idea of taking kids into Manhattan on a weekend just to go to Central Park? Not that CP isn't wonderful, but Westchester and Fairfield Cty are very green, at least that's my opinion.
However -- there is so much to do with kids in the city on weekends and all week long! Subscribe to NYCkidsArts.org (it is not just art!)
I've lived in Pelham for about 15 years. When we first moved to Pelham, from the MidWest, we'd go into Manhattan every day. Once the kids started having lives of their own, we stopped going as frequently. But, we still go a few times a week. Often, it's to the Bronx, though, which is overly maligned. It's also easy to travel north (New England, ADK). The airports are also really close. It's a really really convenient location. And, hanging out in Pelham is always nice too. We love the days when we go nowhere, and can enjoy our yard and the town.
Thanks for those recent posts. Interesting to hear from those of you who have been in the area for so long. I know we will enjoy suburbia and greenness thereof but like knowing there are options. Its similar to our living in denver. We drive to the mountains regularly on weekends and enjoy having city or serenity!
We currently live in Harrison-although will be moving-about a 41 mi. ride to GC-lots of express trains-very convenient to everything-lots of trees and privacy-nature. Beatiful year round-10 min. from shopping, Ct., good local restaurants. We've enjoyed it.
