Hello everyone,

We are seeking your advice about where we should live to ensure a commute of approx. 30 minutes. One of us will work in Armonk, NY and another will work in East Rutherford, NJ. It appears Yonkers is our best bet, is that correct? We are not looking to purchase a home. We would like to rent a one or two bedroom apartment under $2,600 (or rent a small house) if possible in a building that is preferably walking distance to a Metro North train station so that we have access to NYC for work and leisure purposes as well. Any other areas beyond Yonkers that we should consider? We will both drive to the Armonk area and across the GW or Tappenzee bridges to the East Rutherford area. School districts are not a consideration at this time, but safety is important. Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses!

If you are driving across the TZ Bridge why not look in Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow? GW is probably a better bet to get to E Rutherford. Consider WP?

Most likely will be driving across GW bridge because if one of us works in Armonk and the other in East Rutherford, wouldn't the person going to East Rutherford face a long commute if we lived in Tarrytown? Thank you for your quick reply.

Would New Rochelle be a better commute and area vs Yonkers?

Just as a point of reference, my husband drives 2-3 times a week from Mamaroneck to Hoboken for work, leaves at 7:30am and it regularly takes him 1.5 hours. He's done it enough times to figure out the quickest way and it is still 1.5 hours there, usually an hour on the way home. Also, the worst part of the commute is AFTER the GW bridge in NJ.

I would stick to the Tarrytown vicinity. Quickly hop on the TZ and then good luck in NJ.

Not really... New Rochelle is on the eastern side of the county. But it depends, if you are close to the Hutch in NR it might not be too bad, not downtown NR though.

There are some very nice areas of Yonkers on the Bronxville border. You can hop on the Bronx River or cross county and get to Armonk in 20-25 mins traffic depending.

What about the commute from Yonkers to East Rutherford though? Wouldn't it be better to take TZ bridge versus GW bridge notwithstanding the added mileage from Tarrytown versus Yonkers?

From Tarrytown yes. When I lived in Bronxville always took the GW to NJ. Now it varies depending upon day of week anticipated traffic. I still prefer the GW if I am headed down near Rutherford. The Tap if going to ramsey/paramus/or western NJ -- Morristown.

Live in Bedford/Armonk area which is 10 miles due north of White Plains and I don't commute to NJ. I go to see family/football games/shopping etc..usually on the weekends.

Sorry, a bit confused. Is it really the case that the GW would be faster than the TZ to get to East Rutherford during morning rush hour? I was under the impression that the GWB is to be avoided at all costs during rush hour.

Coming into NYC yes, not heading out to NJ - but I could be wrong...
