Myself and an old friend are planning to meet in Asheville for a few days, and he would like to take his dog along. I'd like to know if Asheville is dog friendly--would it be easy to walk around downtown and find places to sit outside on the patio with the dog? If so, do you recommend any good cafes/restaurants?

Yes, and no. Asheville has one of the worst anti-dog laws in the country (mandatory pediatric sterilization)... not exactly what I call dog friendly! However, if you are just visiting there for a few days that shouldn't be a problem.

We were there in early April and it was still a little chilly for dining out, but there are several restaurants with outdoor seating: Cafe on the Square, the Laughing Seed Cafe, Mellow Mushroom, and Jerusalem Garden cafe. We like the European Bistro too.

All of Biltmore Estate is OK for leashed dogs, except inside the house and restaurant of course. But they have outdoor dining as well (and great food!). Of course lots of hiking trails off the Blue Ridge. Enjoy your visit!

Glenzx2, I had no idea that Asheville had that law. That is terrible! I'm surprised because I know that they have a Kennel Club and they hold shows every year. Well, I'll cross them off my list -- thanks!
