that's interesting, thanks for sharing. with three kids and just a little college funds (we always planned on going back to europe) it would be a big release.

I wouldn't move to NC just because of education unless your kids are already in High School. Have you heard that the UNC system is having to go through huge budget cuts? The universities aren't going to stop spending money. So of course the tuition is going to go skyrocket to make up for it.

of course the have/had budget cuts. not only in NC, just everywhere. I would be surprised and find it suspicious, if they would NOT have financial problems like all the other universities.

I googled a little today and really think, the tuition you pay e.g. for chapel hill is reasonable compared to others.

I would hope, my kids would start college in asheville and move on to chapel hill after 1 or 2 years.

University of Delaware is asking for almost the double tuition for in-state students and does not have a better reputation as UNC at all.

The cost of living in Asheville is the higest in the state, next closest city in NC to have the same cost of living is Wilmington. Asheville has the lowest pay scale in the state.

In the 28801 zip code the Per capita income is $18,111, the Median Household Income is $25,236. the Average Home Sale Price is $250,000. The avarage rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is $773, the avarage rent for a 2 bedroom is $803.

So if you were to earn the median income, then per month you will have $2103 (before tax) $800 goes to rent, $50 goes to water, sewer & garbage, $175 goes to electric, $125 goes to cable/phone/internet, $100 goes to cellphone plan, $10 goes to net flix, If you have car payments, avarage car payment $300, gas $150, insurance $95. Leaving you with $298 a month to spend on food, entertainment, & not to mention the original figure of $2103 was before taxes was taken out, also these figures are just for 1 person with no children & no pets

I have visited Asheville many times, my mother lives in a neighboring town. I do enjoy "visiting" Asheville in the warmer months. There is a different vibe there. One I haven't found anywhere else in N.C. I have to agree though, that Pretentious people are everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a bit much, and although I haven't Actually seen any drug use , I'm willing to bet that it was going on all around me. I have been looking to move lately and make a change, but I have a 2 year old son to think of, and after reading the aforementioned posts, don't think I'll be choosing Asheville.
