I almost wish for the days when gnats were the problem. The mosquitos have taken over as most hated bug. Talking from a guy here who lived in Florida for 30 years...my poor legs have never looked this bad. I think I'm going to hire an old B2 bomber to dump a few thousand gallons of pure deet over my house...

Sounds like you live near a body of water. Its not deet, but you can "dump" (spray) citronella oil over your whole yard. It keeps them away...until it rains again Maybe try planting some plants too!
I am now living in an apartment and it is near a water feature. Never had a gnat problem before, but it could be this year's odd weather in No. Cal or the fact that this is an apartment, not sure really what causes it or how long it lasts.
I've read heaps about the dryer sheets, pouring bleach down the drains, and placing little dishes of vinegar at hotspots around the apartment.
Can someone tell me how long the gnat season lasts and what I might do to be rid of them. I saw the pest control professional pull up in the parking lot the other day and he said the little buggers are attracted to everything from beer to vinegar to cat's **** (which may or may not include some brands of beer, lol)
Okay, so please give me a clue as to how long this hell will last and steps I can take to cut it short.
Going to try the Citronela (sp?) as so far nothing has worked including dryer sheets hanging around my hat making it very hard it to see what I was doing. They seem lurk around in clusters just waiting for you to walk into them so they can drive you nuts! If I lived where neighbors could see me they would wonder about the old lady in her yard muttering obscenities and waving her hands at unseen things.
For bites I have found Absorbine Jr works well. Look for the small bottles that have a sponge tip so you can just dab it. If you have already scratched it may sting but won't itch. Only issue is it does have a smell, not bad kind of like linament, which I think it is.....
