What is the best route from central GA to the Boone area? I've tried the google maps ways, and none of them are particularly great or direct. Any insider info on what routes are the best ways to get up through the mountains? Thanks!

If coming from Atlanta quickest is to come up 85 to 321.

If you want mountainous routes, well, they aren't going to be great or direct. What are you looking for and where are you coming from?

Coming from Macon, GA. I'd prefer fast routes over scenic ones.

Then you'd take 75 to 85 then 321.

^ This is the quickest way.

There are dozens of other ways, including 75N-85N-US 29N-26N-US 321S

My favorite route from Macon is I-75 to I-285/I-85 to 276N (exit left just before Greenville SC) to 26 to 40 to 321. Catch the 276 "shortcut" at the right time (7 pm to 7 am) and it will save you lots of time. OK maybe 15 to 20 minutes.

Also consider coming up 221 at Marion to NC-105 in Linville then through Banner Elk to Boone. since I live in Lenoir I usually use 321. if I have to drop someone or something off in Boone first I use 221.

I drive it a LOT!
Oh! Get gas in SC!

I HAVE driven that way, and I dont see how that could be any quicker. Same with 221, up near where 221 parallels the Blue Ridge Pkwy, you have to really slow down, whereas 321 is pretty much wide open the whole way except for a short stretch near Blowing Rock.
