Dog ticks are common in this area and some carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Deer ticks carry Lyme disease, they are very small and harder to see than dog ticks. So far not as many but deer are moving back in so maybe only a matter of time. When you have been outside it is always important to check yourself, especially scalp. I run a small tooth comb through mine being sure I am in contact with scalp. Flu like symptoms should always be suspect in the summer, better safe than sorry. Regarding rattlesnakes, they live in this area, dry conditions may have brought them out. We live on a rocky south facing slope a common habitat but in 12 years have only seen a few. As I've mentioned before our dogs have been bitten (survived) but they are apt to stick noses under rocks which I rarely do. :-) Actually copperheads more of a problem as they don't warn you. Learn to recognize them!

I want to take the kayaks out on the lake, first time I have done this. What snakes are in the water? Do rattlesnakes or copperheads swim?

Just go to the doctor. There are many other tick borne illnesses besides Lyme and they are mostly all treated by Doxycycline. I'm in Chapel Hill, but my daughter had a weird bite the other day — not even sure what it was because there was no tick attached, could have been a mosquito bite that she scratched too much (she has somewhat sensitive skin), but it got a big rash about 3-4 inches around it and the doc took one look and was all, "here's some doxycycline just in case". They don't have to test for Lyme. The tests are not always conclusive anyway. They just need to treat with doxy. I have a good friend who's whole family has been through the Lyme protocol.

Other tick borne illnesses in NC include Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, erlichiosis, and STARI.

Organic Donna, all snakes can swim, but rattlesnakes and copperheads don't live in the water. The Water Moccasin (aka Cottonmouth) is the only venomous snake in the state that lives in the water, but that's down east. Don't worry and have fun in your kayak!

I chuckled. Don't forget sharks! I hear they can swim up the French Broad.
