I was curious about the mountains of NC. I've never visited, but I'm hearing some great things about the Ashville area. Can you guys tell me more?

1. I am an English and Journalism high school teacher in Texas, and I'm working on my MA to teach ELA at the Jr. College level along with a reading specialist certification. How is NCs education field at this moment? Is it as bleak as Texas?

2. My husband works as a jailer currently, but has been trying to become a game warden. He has a BS, but isn't using it because where we live there is simply nowhere to use it. He wants to stay in law enforcement. What would his realistic career ops be?

3. What is the weather like, year round? A link is okay, I just want a general idea.

4. Pet friendly: we have 4 dogs and I compete in agility trials. I would really like to live somewhere where my dogs are welcome on trails and outdoor patios. (I'm proud to say they are well-trained! CGC and therapy certs!)

5. Outdoor activities: We love being outdoors. I love to camp and hike, my other half loves to hunt and fish. What areas will give us the best opportunities for this?

6. Anything else you think is important for us to know. I think we are going to take a vacation that way this summer. So helping us plan to get a great feel of any activities and areas we would like would be tremendously helpful.

Thanks!

D&J

Perhaps it is bleaker? And getting worse. Just as Governor Perry has cut 49,000 teaching positions in TX, NC is losing positions (starting with TAs, and soon to move into more teachers I believe) Teachers have not had a step increase for 4 years. In fact I am making less now than I did 4 years ago...

Possible to find positions in city, county police / sheriff if he has the training and law enforcement certs. He will need the national cert to apply for law enforcement. Regarding a game warden, depending on what his B.S is in, he might qualify to apply. I believe some states requirs a B'S in an eath science / biology type field for game wardens?

HOT HUMID and HUMID. It ain't TX summer that's for sure. It is the humidity. Winters (December--Marh)are usuallu in the high 20s lower 30s and 3-4 snowfalls a year

4. Pet friendly: we have 4 dogs and I compete in agility trials. I would really like to live somewhere where my dogs are welcome on trails and outdoor patios. (I'm proud to say they are well-trained! CGC and therapy certs!)

If you own, pets will not be a problem. Renting? Very low odds of getting any place with more than 2 pets...

Out-of-doors? Might want to look west towards the mountains. More forested areas, beautiful hiking trails. The Triangle area has some great state parks and in-land man made lakes like Jordan and Kerr.

6. Anything else you think is important for us to know. I think we are going to take a vacation that way this summer. So helpig us plan to get a great feel of any activities and areas we would like would be tremendously helpful.

Come out and visit before moving. Have employment in hand before moving. Come out next year in July and stay a few weeks before any final decisions arer made.

The biggest question is, if you have never visited the area, why do you want to relcate there? You don't seem to know much about it at all, yet you "want to relocate?" What traits of the area caught your eye that you've decided to relocate there without even having visited?
