Coming from Atlanta, looking for a day trip somewhere where I can bring the kids to see snow and play around for a little while. Not looking for a fancy resort, just somewhere quiet.
We used to bring them to the smokey mountains and find a big patch on the side if the mountain roads.. Not against doing that again, but want to make sure there is snow on the ground.
I think there's a winter storm warning for the High Country (Boone area) for tonight and tomorrow. Not sure I'd want to drive in that, though. You might post in the Western NC forum instead and folks there could give you the weather forecast looking out the window.

I live near Banner Elk & Sugar Mtn. We are in the midst of a fabulous winter wonderland .... started about 6:00 tonight (after raining all day)... I'd guess it's about 2-3 inches so far and still coming down. It's one of the finest, lightest snows I think I've ever seen.
If the Boone-Banner Elk area works for you, check out Ray's Weather. It's the most local and accurate weather reporting - bar none - for this area, Do keep in mind that a lot of western NC is under a Winter Storm Warning, so driving can be treacherous especially if you aren't used to it and/or don't have the right vehicle and equipment.
What about closer to Asheville/Hendersonville? Any measurable (sled-able) snow in that area? My son's 7th birthday, and thinking about a day trip from Greenville tomorrow. Both kids even got saucer sleds from Santa just for such a situation. Well, also because a $3 sled is magically $8-12 when we do get snow down here.
