I realize there are a variety of ages for posters on this city-data, but wondered if any of you had run into the issue of difficulty with finding a doctor who will take new Medicare patients. As a smaller city, does AVL have docs willing to take new patients that are not high profit (i.e., medicare). If I move there, I would hope to have a choice of docs. My personal preference would be for someone more experienced and not right out of med school. Anyway, I don't know if this is an issue at all, given the high number of retirees in AVL.

Moved into Asheville City 2 years, choice of doctors accepting Medicare, no problem. I have a Supplemental Plan also.
I have a supplemental plan too, but wondered if docs were not taking new patients in the AVL area. So far, posters aren't indicating any issues with availability. Are there outpatient clinics that are recommended?
This is actually a wise question to ask before moving. I know someone who recruits doctors for a living, and some practices have quit taking any patients on Medicare. It's unfortunate.
Some practices have even stopped taking insurance altogether and are practicing concierge medicine instead.

That is happening all over the country. We had a wide choice of doctors to take our Medicare and Medigap F insurance.
If I move to Asheville/WNC, I will need to select a new Medicare Advantage plan. Do any of you have recommendations or warnings about particular insurance companies in the Asheville area?
We can't even find doctors taking United healthcare that doesn't have a months long waiting list..... I think your best bet is to search around for doctors that accept it then call them and ask if they are actually taking patients and how long it will be until being seen.
Waiting one month for an appointment to see a new physician is very fair. Specialist, would be longer. If they are not busy, you won't want him/her. There are plenty of doctors affiliated with hospitals here wherein the hospitals advertise on the back pages of the Sunday newspapers as to docs who are taking new patients. Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC is the most popular program in NC, and entire state is in network which makes it very easy to use doctors in different cities, counties.
