Forgot about the ticks, hate them, RMSF is dangerous important to learn the symptoms. Getting more deer back in the area so assume Lyme will follow. If you have dog be sure they take heartworm pills it has become a problem here. We do have mosquitoes if near damp areas but not like some places, thank heavens. Wildlife abounds but most is good and all are interconnected even the ones I don't like much.
My dog is on heartworm prevention and free-roams a piece of property we own that also has deer on it frequently. Have never had a problem with ticks or RMSF... knock on wood.
Thank you all so much for the answers! It may seem silly to some, but I really hate the creepy crawlers ! I don't like spiders but get my share of them in NH. I no longer hike much, so don't worry about much more than ticks inNH where there is an epidemic killing off many moose. I also don't mind snakes too much because my son helped me overcome that phobia, but don't want to meet a poisonous one anywhere! I do fear the black widow and brown recluse spiders now. Am relieved about the flying cockroaches, too. Never heard about rattlesnakes in NH but there aren't any in southern NH where I live ( I hope!). I noticed a post about Allegheny Ants and fire ants. I love to garden and didn't think about that! Thanks for the heads up on those! I remember staying with my grandkids in Charlotte about four years ago and waking up with welts because an ant crawled into my bed during the night! A lot to think about. Thanks, all, for your input!
Allegheny ants won't be a big issue unless you buy land that's been undisturbed for a while. If you buy a house with a yard that's been mowed and gardens that are tended they're unlikely to be there. Poison ivy on the other hand..... it seems to be everywhere and especially seems to love climbing tall pines - that may be some of the green carpet you've seen. At times it can produce a second canopy within the trees.
