Pockets of color, esp at lower elevations...dependent on tree species/micro clime and how many leaves are still left on any given tree or clump of trees.
Sun angle/point of view dependent, also.
Many of our trees at our higher elevation range from bare/stripped by winds to brown, to freeze killed and canopy full of crinkly nuke winter like leaves.
Suggestions for MV/Waynesville...
MV: Soco Rd out toward BRPkway, and BRPkway toward Cherokee. And, 276 north out of MV and I-40 toward the Gorge.
Waynesville: 276 out of W'ville toward the BRPkway, or 276 to 215 up to BRPkway, or Waynesville entrance onto BRPway from 23/74, or 209 out of Waynesville toward Luck, Trust & Hot Springs...
Not being a pessimistic: there are some good examples of 'color' around, but it is simply a very less colorful Autumn due to the Summer moisture and temps.
It is going to be an A Day today, so exc day for an Autumn drive around western NC, imo.
A few shots from chasing the ball yesterday, with my Geezer Buds at our club, Laurel Ridge CC.

Today we were at Walmart in Waynesville. The maples in the lot were so pretty! It seems the maples and bradford pears are the prettiest right now. Up here at 4400 feet the colors aren't really that great and lots of leaves are already gone.
You'll find bright red sourwoods and black gums on the dryer ridges. TN is getting some good color finally, we were drier than NC this year. I saw some nice leaves on the foothills parkway near Maryville, that won't be helpful to you all but the foothills parkway off I-40 to Cosby is convenient to Asheville/Maggie Valley if the BRP isn't showing color. Lots of hikes in the Cosby part of GSMNP. You might also find colors at Big Creek in the park. The Chestnut Branch trail (park beside the ranger house) could be good after you climb out of the creek section to the drier part. That's in WNC so not off topic any more!
Not in WNC, but the drive between Mountain City, TN and Damascus, VA was beautiful today.
