Will be driving close by Lake James on Friday on our way to the mountains and wanted to stop by to check it out as I haven't been there before. Will be coming from the east on I-40. Can anyone recommend a few good stopping points that quickly show what the lake has to offer? I'm mainly interested in swim beaches, camping, and boating, so anything related to those would be perfect. Don't know what's open right now, but I don't mind just doing a drive-by if it's closed just to take a quick look.

I found these places on Google Maps, but please feel free to provide input:
- Lake James Camping Resort & Marina
- Canal Bridge
- Lake James State Park - Paddys Creek (looks like a big swim beach)
- Bear Creek Marina

Appreciate any advice!

I grew up close to there, but Lake James State Park was created after I left and I've only been through it, briefly, one time. It's very nice though and I recommend you check it out.

I suggest that you get off I-40 at exit 94, Dysartsvile Road. Go about 2 miles, then turn left on hwy 70. Go about a mile more then turn right on Bridgewater Road (#1233) at the ugly lumber yard. After about another mile you can turn left at Benfield's Landing Road to go toward Lake James State Park. However, I recommend you stay straight here for a few miles to cross a few dams with spectacular views across the lake at the mountains. If you keep going straight rather than turning, the road becomes N. Powerhouse Road. Go at least to Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, then decide whether to turn around or continue a loop that'll bring you to the state park from the other side. Be aware that the church isn't actually on Saint Paul's Church Road. The original church was on that road but it burned and was rebuilt in its current location. That part can confusing.

Lake James is a combination of kudzu thickets in one direction and spectacular beauty when you turn your head. Hope you like it. I think it's beautiful.
