We first started visiting this area 30 years ago. We loved that it was remote (you just didn't happen onto
it), not overly crowded (except during leaf season), beautiful scenery, waterfalls, etc.. This past week we visited the area. I was shocked at how much traffic there is now in the area. The traffic started getting heavy before we reached Cashiers on Hwy 64. We met streams of cars coming our way and at 64/Main Street in Highlands, it was backed up 7-8 cars deep. Not as bad at the intersection at Cashiers, but still a lot of traffic. It will likely be much worse in October. I noticed trees are being cut to make way for more developments and retail. It certainly has a changed a lot over the last 30 years, and not for the better, IMO.

We went there in April of last year, had been there a few times before. While the area on the drive up is still beautiful I wasn’t much impressed by Highlands ,bought a few groceries while there and everything seemed way overpriced!

I think A LOT of people are vacationing in North Carolina right now as a way to break out of their COVID lockdown blues. Reports I have seen say that at the beach they are having the best year in a long time with more houses booked than usual. I think it is the same in the mountains. I have seen lots of folks both in NC and elsewhere talk about going to the mountains to getaway.

That's a really good point. It may settle back after this is over.
