Question: where is the dam creating Lake James? I cannot find it on Google maps. Is it a natural lake?

You are correct, I can't see the dam(s) on Lake James from a terrain map. The wiki article says there are 4 earthen dams creating Lake James for Duke Power. They are supposedly hydroelectric supplying dams, but I see no power stations.

Interesting?

The power station is well disguised. Thanks.

It's not looking good. Found this article today-

https://www.lakejamesstatepark.org/n...-at-lake-james

Apparently, there's much more aircraft activity in the Lake James area. Would be great to get feedback from folks who live at the lake.

So---any suggestions as to where else we can focus our search for a clean lake to live on, that provides peace and doesn't have harsh winters?

Thank you.

MM

You might look at Lake Keowee in the upstate of SC, north of Clemson near the NC state line.

Discover Lake Keowee - Lake Keowee, SC

I suspect this area encounters air traffic descending into AVL from ATL.

Our lowland house in about midway up Lake Norman. The airport in Charlotte uses our airspace as a landing pattern for Charlotte traffic. We seldom notice it, along with all the other thousands of homes built out this way.
Noise abatement procedures have improved tremendously in the last couple of decades. We are 25 miles, as the crow flies, away from the Charlotte Airport.
I still would not like to live within 5-10 miles of a runway, but 15-20 miles and out is almost a non-issue.
