Many may disagree but Johnson City, TN would be worth checking out. It is a large college town but has a slightly liberal bent and is in the midst of some major downtown redevelopment and investment (Tupelo Honey, Trek Concept Store, a couple new breweries). Some have compared it to where Asheville or Chatanooga were 20 years ago. Exciting things on the horizon and affordable housing available very close to downtown.

That's pretty much right. It's definitely conservative, but still more liberal than most of the south. It also is fairly buisness oriented, but it also is (or at least attempts to be) somewhat cultural.

Greenville is a business center, and its close to Greer, BMW has a plant there, also Michelin Tire headquarters. Several International Corps. have their US operations in Greenville. Asheville depends on Tourists for a large part of their income.
