You can't go wrong with either La Crescent or Onalaska. My wife is from La Crescent and we have lived in Onalaska (work). For me, I'd chose living in Onalaska, just because its a lot less driving. I use to drive across the bridges (2 different way over to MN) everyday and it does get a little old, but then again..commutes in this area are very short and traffic jams are nothing like you'd find in Chicago. La Crescent is very nice...don't get me wrong, but Onalaska has everything and more...the schools are very good, and the town is almost crime free. The problem with the city of La Crosse is property taxes, which are sky high imo.
