Why is that such an eye-opener? Were you expecting pictures of kids sitting in front of a tv playing video games?

I lived in CO for a few years after Columbine. Stuff like that in the paper would have been, well, uncool if you can dig it. I just hadn't seen kids with big grins holding up dead animals in a while, even though our family photo albums have that kind of thing all over.

There are many hunters in Colorado.

Local parks often have a shelter building--sort of an open-air building to have the family reunions or what have you at. Along one or all sides runs a bar. They don't sell ya the stuff--but you have a nice spot to set it all up. The point is...these options were not present in other places I have lived.

There are a lot of really nice parks in WI. That is a nice feature.

But, wait a minute...a gathering of more than 25 people might require a beer tent. Gotta have something to wash down the goodness at a brat fry. Even at church.

And, ram2, I never said there were no hunters in CO. I commented that the photos of children with guns were not on the front page of the paper. I did not ever notice a young hunter with his prize on the front page of the newspaper in CO. But, like I say, it could have been due to the fresh sting of Columbine. Nothin' wrong with a kid learning how to hunt..but it has a stronger presence and social acceptance in WI than in other locations. Most of my friends from elsewhere are kind of shocked to find that I learned as a kid too. Ah, and going hunting or ice fishing is an acceptable reason to miss school here as well. That is, if the lake freezes.

You don't see these pics in newspapers where I've lived.
It's really weird seeing them after years of not.

I have lived in several states where you can setup a gathering with beer at a local park.

I always thought hunting was popular in Colorado due to the bigger game they have vs the midwest.

I think the OP was pointing out that hunting pictures don't appear in the newspapers like they do in Wisconsin.

Yes. The Wisconsin hunters go to CO to hunt elk before the deer season in WI. And maybe they put their CO elk hunting pictures in the WI newspaper.

A few years ago driving back from Michigan to Minnesota somewhere near Rhinelander we had a memorable encounter.
This guy's home was perched close to and above the highway. It was about 11 in the morning and he was in a bathrobe with a beer can in one hand and a cigarette in the other on a riding lawn mower. He would make a very fast run down the hill timing these runs when a car was coming making it appear that an imminent collusion was about to happen. The low ditch along the highway broke his speed but we thought for sure he was suicidal and nearly had to lock up our brakes. I distinctly recall the crazed laughter and look on his face as he headed back up the hill and how much fun he was having.
