I can only speak for myself but growing up we ate brats but I dont recall ever them being called one or the other. Brands? Maybe. But i just remember eating “brats”. And thats with having German in my dna lol courtesy of my grandpa. Not saying they didnt, I just dont remember it being part of the dinner discussion.

I do find this thread interesting though.

Lived in Madison a decade, and never heard them called red or white. Had plenty of brats of different make ups though, of course.

Red is definitely better in my opinion. It also seems like it's a lot less common for some reason, not really sure why.

I have only had Johnsonville, so I could not answer red or white.

makes me think of that commercial, where that b@$trD would ruin that one guy's happy and peaceful alone time and scream to EVERYONE in ear shot, so they'd come get a free brat: "N-A-M-E" is making Johnsonville brats... Johnsonville brats.. Johnsonville brats.

Anyone old enough to remember THAT commercial???

Perhaps I'm misguided, but I assumed the brats we all know and love like Johnsonville, Klements, etc, that are found in grocery stores are red, because they are reddish in color!

Or does red in this context mean like this? If so, red sucks!!

No, I've never seen those before; red means that there is beef in the brat. The original Johnsonville brat is a white brat because its made from pork. They also make a beef brat, which is a red brad (to me, at least).

I should've just asked whether people prefer beef in their brats or not lol.

Probably because the red variety is what most think of as bratwurst. I'd say this is the case for most Americans. The only places I've seen the white variety offered has been in German restaurants. Consulted a friend that is Milwaukee born and raised about white and red and his reply was "what dark magic is this?"

As for brands I don't care for Johnsonville. Massed produced and tastes like it. Usinger's and Bunzel's are my favorite options when I visit Milwaukee. Wish I could get them in Phoenix but we have a quality German sausage company here in Phoenix that makes a quality sausage.
