DOTTY DUMPLING'S in Madison. Best burgers I've ever had. I lived literally next door to the place for a year and didn't actually eat there until after I had moved. Good thing because I would have been in there 4 times a week!

It's on N. Frances St. between West Johnson and University Ave. There's a parking ramp right across the street. Enjoy.

EDIT: the last couple times I've gone there's been a wait. If there is any type of sporting event (currently bball and hockey will be frequent) at the Kohl Center, this place gets completely packed. Just warning you.

Homemade on charcoal grill while on your property with the fresh air.

In Lake Hallie between Chippewa and Eau Claire small place called Piffs near Harley shop has some great cheeseburgers. Bruce the Recipe box does them good.

Culvers for chain burgers are great.

Who has the best ones? No chains, please.
What restaurant was this in LG? I grew up there and can't think of any place off the top of my head that screams "cheeseburger" at me. I'd like to second Quijote's post about burger places in Milwaukee. That's a great list (even though they rat out one of the South Side's best kept secrets in the Nite Owl). When I read your initial post I almost thought your husband was talking about Fred's in Burlington as it's only about 15 minutes away from LG.

If you are ever on the east side of the state heading up north, Mickey Lu's Bar B Q in Marinette has great burgers, shakes! Its not a big place but an old fashioned experience!

My husband has a hard time remembering his telephone number, so I don't know where his cheeseburger was-except it was across the street from the lakefront.-10 years ago!
Thanks for the ideas and suggestions everyone, I can't wait to go back.
Dreamhunter, you know that's what I will be doing-we did it in October!
