Where are your favorite WI. weekend getaways ? (Sheboygan, Wausau: live in, food)

My wife and I are looking for somewhere to spend 2 or 3 days in October. And please don't say Door County ! I'm sure it's beautiful, but I'm not one to fight huge crowds.

We live in S/E Wisconsin(Oconomowoc), and we don't want to drive more than 2 or 2.5 hours. One possibility is the Spring Green area.

Yes Spring Green. We stayed in Mineral Point in September and really enjoyed it. We drove down along Platteville. Mineral Point was fun, food was good. We went to a bar and listened to music. Not crowded when we were there so it was nice.

may be a little past the desired transit time; but I would think the area along the river by Prairie du Chien, etc could make for some nice fall drives and scenery (even along the way) depending on what one was looking to do.

And yes the area around Spring Green can be beautiful that time of the year; esp if hitting the fall colors. You could take in a play at APT; that time of year i believe they are indoor shows.

I heard Mt. Horeb is nice, but it doesn't look like there's much to do there. Or is there ?

We like to visit the Cave of the Mounds which is near Mt Horeb, then swing back for some lunch at the Grumpy Troll pub.


I'd say if out sightseeing or hiking/walking around; that time of year the State Parks in that area can offer up some nice views. May be worth grabbing a park sticker if that's something of interest.

Thanks Ranger. We were at the caves many years ago, and I'd love to go back. I thought it was way farther west though.

Is there a nice place to stay right in Mt. Horeb?

Is it very far from Mineral Point to Cave of the Mounds?

I'll have to defer to others for places to stay as we just make those runs as day trips. Looks like MP is less than a 1/2 hour from the Cave, probably the same for any of those areas being considered. So may be pretty easy to find a spot to stay at and head out from there to visit different sites

I like Wausau, there is a few nature areas good for hiking. The Quad Cities for riverboat gambling. Galena, IL is very pretty and a fun little town. Manitowoc, Plymouth, Mayville, Horicon Marsh just to name a few.

I'd also give a vote for Mineral Point. Such a great little town. The whole area is beautiful to explore.
Also, Kohler-Andrae state park area is lovely... lots of open spaces to traverse. There is lodging nearby in Kohler, Sheboygan, Howards Grove, Plymouth, or even on-site in Kohler-Andrae State Park (campground.)
