I think the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 is enough. Working 40 hrs a week on it turns out to be $1160 or $13920 .
And 60 hrs a week turns out to be $1740 per month i.e. $20880 per year.

Whether its 40 hrs a week or 60 hrs, a person can certainly survive on that. Sure he will have to live with roommates, but it is doable.

I don't get the concept of "too low." I mean, I guess it depends on the situation and degree of desperation. I've gotten accustomed to the wage I make and the standard of living it provides, but if I were really hard-up for income, then I'd take an $8/hour job and be thankful for it. Any money's better than no money.

Not on Long Island, it's not.

OP, it really depends on three things: What you do, what the market will bear for your particular skill set, and where you live.

I haven't worked for an hourly wage in 25 years or more.

I would say $50 an hour, minimum.

1500/mo is enough for me to live comfortably even in Southern California.

This requires a before-tax earning of $2000/mo or $100/day also to ensure some remaining money is saved up.

At 8 hours a day, this translates to $12.50/hr.

Absolutely won't settle for anything below that or the quality of my life will suffer (either by having to cut back essentials or working longer.)

I don't think the company cares if you accept or not. They'll find someone else that will. The "competition" is not the employer.. but other candidates.

I'd agree with niffy - It all depends on one's situation. If all of a sudden I lost everything, and still have to provide for my family.. I'll do whatever is necessary. If a minimum wage job is the only option... I'd do it.
