Many parts of South Orange County are below 5% unemployment. OC as a whole is around 8.6%, not great, but not worth moving away from.

No thanks. Even if you doubled my salary, I wouldn't move there.

Yea, but good luck affording a home or anything else. They are paying McDonald's burger flippers $15/hr... I'd be interested to find out how much it costs to BUY a hamburger...

I would go if I had the money to get there. In Indiana, the unemployment rate is around 9%. 3.5% is better than 9%.

Forget housing. I'd move there in the SPRING and live out of a van, then take one of those burger flipping jobs for $15/hour.

I read a story recently that said Halliburton is hiring a ton of people to work in the oil fields out there. No experience required, just a high school diploma and a good work ethic. It said after a couple of years and with all of the overtime, you should be able to make ~$120k/yr.

If I ever get fired/laid off I'll move there in a heartbeat.

I briefly stopped in North Dakota this summer. It's nearly impossible to find a hotel room. The state doesn't have enough housing for the oil/gas/construction work it is importing. Don't forget winter lasts about seven months up there.

The cost of every day items is on par with the rest of the central plains and midwest.

I suppose I would move and work there if I could work inside (Mcdonald's). I just couldn't handle them Winters there working outside.

I was under the impression OC unemployment was much higher. I would move there if they had any jobs in IT, which it doesn't look like they do.

I have to say, some of the statistics that come from agencies like job services, do not reflect those numbers of folks that are no longer receiving unemployment benefits, because their benefits and their extensions have run out.
