Individuals are opening group/boarding homes. Where are these patients coming from? How do I go about finding them? I have called different social services depts in the surrounding hospitals and also behavioral clinics... please give me some leads. I have also tried DAS and Human Services. No Luck.

When we looked for one for my dad, we looked in the yellow pages and searched for web sites. I think some web sites had a listing of homes in the area.

I've seen ads on craigslist.org I think, and in the local newspaper.

Is this for adult residential facilities (developmental, and/or mental illness), or elderly?

Other than the normal yellow pages, a marketing plan to local hospitals, and networking with every vendors associated in the industry: pharmacy, medical equipment, training / schools, activity organizers, local community resources, and word of mouth, as well as fellow competing residence.

Some residence would get referrals but do not have room, and they just may refer to you instead.

For DD, how about regional centers, and other advocate groups?

I think this is something you should know before even thinking of opening a group home. There are many different steps you have to take to open one. You don't just buy a house and start accepting applicants. Most group home residents pay for their stay through medicaid/medicare and they go through their insurance to find credible homes.

It's a really hard business and I hope you know what you're getting yourself into. Most of the group homes my aunt has been in lacked good care givers because it is a very hard position to take on. At one home, the care givers were imported from Africa.

What state are you in and is this for elderly or youth?
In Arizona there are tons of group homes. My mom is going into one on Saturday after being in an assisted living facility which didn't work out.
They all must be licensed and are surveyed once a year by the state dept. of health. After you get a license, you can become affilitated with agencies that make referrals to people looking for help with this. I got referrals from "A Place for Mom" which helped me choose 6 homes to look at and I chose one of those and now A PL for Mom will get $. There are alot of these referral agencies that only get paid if you choose one of their referrals. You have to contract with them but if you get on their list, you have a better chance of getting new residents in your home. Hope this helps.

If you have to ask that question, you probably don't need to be running a group home.

Very much sounds like a cart before the horse situation.

If you are licensed and registered with the State and Feds, your residents will appear.

I think that is a logical question, I just recently opened up a family care home for the elderly in NC i will only accept private pay so I think depending on how nice your home is and what you have to offer the word gets around quick. Word of Mouth and how you present yourself is the best way.

This is a vary profitable business if this is where you suppose to be. Don't just do it for the money but do it because you have a love for it and that you know that you can make a difference in your residents lives. It's not hard to get residents for your group home. Newspaper ads. word of mouth. brochures they are out there you just have to go get them. The prices of nursing facilities are out of this world. And the care that they get don't come near to equaling the amount paid for it.They are trying to care for more residents with less workers and you don't do that with people.A nursing home will take everything that resident have if need be.They will take your home your property your life insurance policy anything of value.I've seen them leave residents nothing. The residents are out there please go get them. I watched my loving mother with just an 8th grade education open up three group homes. After she had paid all of her employees she made over $300,000 a year. I have now opened my first group home.
