how does it know about the "people i may know"??

for example, my girlfriend signed up the other day for linkedin. she declined to have her contacts imported from her email. she has never visited my profile page.

yet a few hours later she shows up as a person i may know.

Do you have your email linked to linkedin? Not to sound obvious, but that's the most likely scenario and yes, they do have a somewhat aggressive policy when it comes to suggesting people.

Have you ever worked for the same company as your girlfriend? Do you have any contacts in common?

I had someone pop up on there who I had not interacted with in nearly 20 years. All I can think of is that I might have done some kind of search for them a while back. We didn't attend the same school or anything like that.

Nope, totally different industries and employers, and even countries.

Maybe I did a prior search on Linkedin and just forgot about it, that would be the only explanation that makes any sense, but I don't remember doing so.

The second platform to LinkedIn is a recruiting board which makes CareerBuilder look like the local job adds.

Actually anything you type into an internet search can be saved and linked to your email address. And web pages you click on from a search can be saved as well. "Cookies" on your computer help to identify you.

So you may have at one time searched for your friend's name on a search site. So that old data may have been used.

Also advertisers use search and other information collected to display "smart ads". That is ads for products you might be interested in...

...Then this gets funny with myself. I help friends who are not good with computers search for things or maybe find the map/address of a drug testing place they need to go to for work. Then the next day I get on my computer and there are a bunch of drug testing ads on some web sites I visit.

Or I might read a news story and want to learn more about something. Today I read a story about "Electronic Dance Music" being today's rock for youth. I did not know what that was, so I searched for that. Now I probably will be seeing Electronic Dance Music ads for the next week!

If you want to read something really creepy, stores may figure out you are going to have a baby before YOU know it! Read the following...

If you look for someone on LinkedIn, you will show up in their list.

Anytime someone has looked for me, they become one of the people in my list.

I'd like to make my account go away.

Thankfully, I've never been inclined to sign up for a Facebook account.
( I wonder what the employer looking for my password would say? )
