Why do job interviewer tend to lead people on? At the end of every interview, they seem interested and say they'll call you but they never do.

Why is that?

Because they want you to leave the building as smoothly as possible, and they don't want you to call them.

Yeah, but can't they just say, "look, I don't think you fit with our company".

There are some interviewers are honest enough to say that.....

Let's face it. They don't know you. If you get that reaction, you could go psycho on them.

What if someone was desperate and on his or her 30th interview or 10th or whatever before a breakdown?

Would you want to deal with someone who might turn violent or angry?

It would be better for them not to say anything except thank you for coming in.

Really! There were a few times during interviews when all I wanted to do was open my mouth and say, "Look, you're absolutely hopeless, you look horrible and you can't get a comprehensive sentence to come out of your mouth, there's no way I'm going to let you set foot in here after you leave so just move along now and stop wasting my time ..." but of course I didn't. Ended it as quickly as possible and said, "Thank you for coming and I'll let you know". And, truthfully, I did let them know either with a simple letter or a 'phone call advising that I had a lot of applicants and filled the position. I do think it's very rude to throw out a standard, "we'll call you" when you have no intention of doing so and best to say something along the lines of, "I'll be in touch if I decide to bring you back for a follow-up".

They're sadistic and narcissistic.

That has to be the only reason why.

Anyone who is truly a normal human being would not string people along for any reason.

Even IF, during the interview, you say that you were impressed and you'll give me a call, GIVE ME A CALL!!!

It is human nature. It is uncomfortable to tell the truth in that situation.

What I noticed is if they look away from you when saying "Well I'll give you a call..." then you're not getting the job. It's happens many times to me. You can just tell by their demeanor that they decided not to pick you.

How much experience do you have jobhunting? This sort of behavior is pretty standard. I've been to interviews where I hit it off with the person and they said they'd be in touch, but I never got an offer. It's like dating. You ask someone out and they're friendly. You think they're interested, but they're just being polite.

Crap, I am in serious trouble then. Jobs can really leave in the middle of the night??
