How do you know if a headhunter that contacts you is for real or is a plant? Or am I paranoid?

If you're worrying about someone from your company stalking you, you're paranoid.

If you're worrying about a headhunter contacting you who's not legit and instead is either providing you with fake job leads or trying to steal your personal information, that's a different story.

I may regret this, but here goes....

Why in the world do you think someone in your company would take the time to "feel you out" by posing as a headhunter????

Just be very careful about sharing your references. With headhunters (like thebunny), it's very possible that they will consider them marks. Just like you may be that mark if someone else used you as a reference.

Often they'll pursue your references mercilessly until they p1ss them off and you can't use them anymore.

Thanks for all the opinions.

While I don't think someone from my company is stalking me, I think it's unusual that someone would call the front desk, ask for me by name and then be a headhunter. She asked if I knew anyone interested in position X. I told her no, but asked that she give me her number and if I knew anyone, I would pass the info on. She gave me her number and said she would send me additional info. Asked for my personal email and I gave it to her. Turns out she is a legit headhunter in my field and sent a position description for my position, not position X. And the pay was 15% higher than what I am making. Not worth the jump.

I've never been approached by a headhunter before, so was wondering if it could be something else.

I appreciate all comments.

Why isn't 15% worth it? Just curious.
