Did they tell me this just to be nice or does it mean that they will contact me with an update?
We can only guess. Some companies mean it when they say they'll follow up. Other's don't. You shouldn't expect it to take less time than they said it would--so if they said this week, they don't mean Monday, they mean this week, which includes Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday and Friday.
Either way, you should be pursuing other leads. Do not waste a week waiting on a call that might never come.
I went on a interview this past Friday and I was told that they will let me know this week if I got the job or not.

I would not spend one single moment of my time waiting for them to contact you. Focus on keeping your pipeline full. Keep going and don't let up no matter how many interviews you get or how much good feedback you receive.
In the past I had an employer call me 6 months after I accepted another job. Someone else got the job I previously interviewed for but he remembered me and called me when there was a position available. The interview went well but I think the other person had more experience than I did for the first one.
As a matter of fact let me find his number.......Maybe he will remember me 2 years after the fact....

They need time to check references, but as everyone said, don't sit back and wait.
