Here in Japan virtually everyone gets an end-of-the-year bonus of about 5% of our annual salary. Actually, my employer gives us three bonuses of 5% each. One in March, one in July, and one in December.
It's a great idea. Gives you something to look forward to and count on. Makes Christmas shopping so much more fun.
Why blow money on a party no one wants to attend, hang out with people that you probably don't socialize with anyway and then fake how grateful you are to attend?
Not all companies are like that. Our company is rather small - and most of us (from receptionist to CEO) do actually get along socially as well as on a professional level. We actually like hanging out outside of the office on occasion.
We dont get squat. Since we are all over the country, I think the people who live near a "local office" get a party (offices usually have 1000 people). Those of us around the country that telecommute dont get anything.
Funny thing is, the only time in my life I ever got a "Christmas bonus" was when I worked in a locally owned pool hall in the late 80's early 90's. I think the owner paid us out of his pocket. Now I work for a company making 100bil/year and get nada.
We get the holiday party and we get a yearly bonus. This bonus depends on what you were offered when hired. My package included a 7% bonus and this will fluctuate with how well the company is doing. Most years I get more than 100% of that. Usually, the multiplier is 1.3-1.5.
A few of us upper management types will put on Santa hats, lock ourselves into the security office with a couple bottles of expensive wine that we charge to "office supplies" and use the covert CCTV system to spy on the employees while making rude comments about their personal appearance.
Come to think of it, pretty much the same as any other time of the year except for the Santa hats.
