For the past 8 years I have lived in 3 states and have been always able to find an IT job in hospitals. When I tell my unemployed friends at look to area hospitals they act like it is only for those in medically related professions.
Hospitals have all types of jobs from housekeeping, food service, HR, social work, clerical, finance and accounting, IT (all levels) and of course clinical.
They don't or rarely outsource, and aren't prone to layoffs compared to most industries. Most give health benefits to people working 20 hrs or above.
The one tip I can give you is at least the ones I have worked for do not post jobs on career websites so you have to go to their website.
This may be obvious advise to most, but hope it gives an avenue to someone who hasn't looked at hospital system websites for jobs.
Another "industry" most people don't really think about is higher ed.
Universities and colleges need nurses, IT people, engineers, grant writers, PR people, food service, etc. and they also don't usually post jobs on career websites. The only catch is they don't really hire entry level/new grads, in their job postings they almost always want someone with 3-5+ years of experience.
Not only that but there are so many people in hospitals that go back to school and the hospital/union will pay for it so you can move up and they already know you so it's easier to move around. (Although around here, there have been a lot of hospital closings/lay-offs.)
