What would you guess would be the salary of a assistant manager or store manager at walmart kmart or other retail? I've heard those are the only spots in retail to make decent money.

I think $15 an hour is closer to the mark.

Salary will be dependent on store volume.

If the store nets more than $10 million annually the assistant manager will make in the $40-$60k range. Department managers/leads/supervisors will make $15 or so.

If you are talking about a $1-$3 million mall store, the assistant manager will make $15/hour our so.

If you mean a true big box with a sakes volume of $25 million plus the assistant might make $80k.

This will also vary by region, industry and company.

Used to be if you were willing to put in the hours you could make good money in retail management. Had a friend that was making $30,000(about $60,000 in today's money) a year in the late 80's managing a Foot Locker. Doubt that the managers at Foot Locker are making much more than that now. Same thing with retail sales, back in the 80's sales people selling appliances at Sears could pull in over over $50,000. Now it's a $10-$12 hour job.

Varies all over the place. Competition matters more than cost of living though. But obviously you can make more in high cost areas.

In terms of *good* retailers I would recommend the following:

Ikea

Costco

Container Store

Nordstrom

Publix

Wegmans

Ones that will probably file for bankrupcy in the next 14-18 months:

Sears/Kmart

JC Penny

HH Gregg

Radio Shack (probably spent 10% of their net worth on that commercial!)

Best Buy

We still have one of those where I live.

I never see anyone inside the store.

I have relatives that were assistant managers or store manager. Assistants were getting about $2 more than the people they supervised, store managers in strip mall type stores about 50k, big stores like Walmart $60-80k.
